Museology

Museu Municipal d’Olot

Currently, museums are the most widespread form of managing cultural heritage. The emergence of the first museums can be dated back to the end of the 18th century. Currently, there are museums around the world with different characteristics, functions and aims. Museums are organizations dedicated to the conservation, documentation and promotion of cultural heritage. Museology is the science that aims to study the process of displaying heritage in museums and numerous techniques are used to carry out these aims. A very interesting, wide and diverse field of research to which the ICRPC is dedicated is the study of the evolution and application of this science and the techniques used, particularly museography, the set of techniques used to present heritage in museums, and other techniques originating from other sciences. This line of research also involves the study of the different theoretical currents in museology.
