Who we are

The Institute was created in 2006 by the Generalitat de Catalunya –the Catalan Government– and the University of Girona (UdG). It forms part of the set of research centres that have been created in Catalonia with the aim to unfold quality research of international prominence.

What the Institute contributes

Catalonia is a country with a large cultural heritage that dates from diverse historical epochs, ranging from prehistoric times to the contemporary period. It also has a notable number of highly diverse centres devoted to this heritage’s management, many of them with a long acknowledged record. Moreover, Catalonia presents a broad and quite varied array of possibilities for the utilisation of the cultural heritage and a large number of people use this heritage for a diversity of reasons.

All this accounts for the growing attention focused on the cultural heritage field, making it indispensable to possess an accurate knowledge of its specific possibilities and characteristics. Within this framework, the Catalan Institute for Research on the Cultural Heritage (ICRPC) seeks to be a centre that promotes investigation in this field and one that acts as a reference point and a support for the various agents linked to the cultural heritage.

What we do

The Institute’s activity is mainly focused on the conducting of research projects, which are either promoted by the Institute itself or carried out in collaboration with other institutions or bodies. The research in this field also reaches out to society as a whole through conferences, seminars, symposiums, publications and other initiatives. Likewise, another of the Institute’s goals is to foster, collaborate on and participate in training programmes related to the cultural heritage.
